The CAN program Medical Director and MD Champion is Steve Kairys, MD, MPH, FAAP. Dr. Kairys, along with the Medical Directors of New Jersey’s Regional Diagnostic Treatment Centers and physicians from Cooper University Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Children's Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Valley Hospital, as well as physicians in private practice, participate and deliver the training in a variety of venues. CAN has four curricula, Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect, (SCAN), Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, (PCAN), Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect for Emergency Departments, (SCAN for ED) and Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect for Emergency Medical Services, (SCAN for EMS). Here is what some of our physician trainers have to say about their experience presenting CAN:
“The CAN trainings are a wonderful opportunity to work with representatives from child protection and increase knowledge about child abuse and in particular, the resources available in New Jersey to support families and health care providers. The trainings are aimed at the entire health care team and have been very successful in developing better relationships between health care providers, community resources and DYFS”. Steve Kairys, MD, MPH, FAAP – Chairman of Pediatrics, Jersey Shore University Medical Center
“They say that a good learning experience is always an education for the teacher. I learn something new every time I speak with a group of people interested in doing good work for children. The EPIC philosophy of success through teamwork is evident in every training session I have participated in. I am proud to serve in this way, and have a great time doing it”. Jeanne Craft, MD, FAAP – Department of Pediatrics, Saint Barnabas Medical Center
“PCAN trainers help doctors and their staff make small, practical changes in their patient care that can help prevent suffering in children and their families.” Shoshana T. Melman, MD, FAAP – Medical Director, Foster Care Program, CARES (Child Abuse Research Education & Service) Institute; University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine
“EPIC CAN is a great opportunity to share knowledge and demystify the complexities of child abuse. It is truly an ideal format for dialogue and relationship building which is quite rewarding for the presenter and informative for the doctors and staff who interact. Martin A. Finkel, D.O., FACOP, FAAP – Professor of Pediatrics, Medical Director CARES (Child Abuse Research Education & Service) Institute, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, School of Osteopathic Medicine
“Being a CAN Trainer has been a very gratifying experience. It is a pleasure to work with Resource Development Specialists and DYFS Child Health Unit Nurses from the Division of Youth and Family Services who team teach the CAN portion of the curriculum with a physician. These colleagues bring a wealth of knowledge about specific resources that are available in the local community where the presentation is given, resources that enrich our practices and make our primary care sites much more of a broad "medical home." Being a CAN trainer can help physician’s offices become better medical homes. It gets you "out of the box." E. Susan "Sooze" Hodgson, MD, FAAP – Medical Director Metropolitan Regional Child Abuse Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Newark Beth Israel
